MIDI keyboard
Connect a keyboard labeled MIDI as the performance input.
A keyboard marked MIDI does not send the sound itself. It sends which key you pressed, and how hard. Feelism takes that as your playing, as it is. It does not go through pitch tracking, so this is the surest way to get a response.
What you need
- A MIDI keyboard, or a digital piano with a MIDI jack or a USB jack
- A cable to the computer. If the keyboard says USB, that one cable is enough
- If the keyboard only has a round MIDI OUT, you need an audio interface with a MIDI input, or a small piece of gear that connects MIDI to the computer (a MIDI interface)
Connect
- Connect the keyboard to the computer (with USB, just plug it in)
- On a model with round jacks, run a cable from the keyboard’s MIDI OUT to the audio interface’s MIDI IN
- Open Settings at the top right of Feelism, and under Devices check that keyboard
- Press a key and you should hear a note. If you do not, check that the device you picked is the right one
The sound you hear is Feelism’s sound. The keyboard’s own sound comes from the keyboard’s speaker or its headphone jack.
Level
Open Mix and set it with the Keys knob. At 0, only the keyboard goes silent. The band still plays. How hard you play comes straight from the keys. This knob does not change that.
How this relates to pitch tracking
Pitch in Mix is what listens for the pitch of sound coming in from a mic or a line. A MIDI keyboard and the on-screen keyboard still work when Pitch is off. If you are only playing keys, and not a wind instrument, leave it off so the room is not picked up.
When you want the sound itself
If you want to play the digital piano’s own sound, or you want your sound returned to the headphones, that is the path that sends the sound itself. See Keyboard (digital piano). You can connect both at once. Then Feelism’s sound and the keyboard’s own sound sit on top of each other.
When it piles up on Feelism’s piano
Clear the Piano check in Settings → Band. Feelism’s piano stops. Bass and drums remain. This is the straightforward setup when you are playing the backing yourself. If you want answers back, turn the check on again. The piano either plays backing or answers. It does one of those at a time.
Connected, but no response
- In Settings → Devices, is that keyboard checked?
- Is Keys in Mix at 0?
- Is the keyboard sending on an odd channel, or is a “local off” setting getting in the way?
- Skip the USB hub. Plug the keyboard straight into the computer
