Fills

Turn fills on or off, and choose the answering instrument and the chorus they start.

Leave a little space, and the band answers with a short phrase. That is a fill. You choose which instrument answers, when the answers start, and whether they answer at all.

Turn fills on and off

On the top row (under Groove) there is a Fills check. The key is R. Turn it off and the band only plays backing. It does not answer your pauses. Use this when you want to practice with backing only.

The list beside it is “from which chorus the answers start” (from 1 through from 4). If you want quiet during the melody, start from the second chorus.

Which instrument answers

Pick it from the Voice list. Tenor, Alto, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Guitar. The key is C (Shift goes back). This voice is used both for the fill line and for the theme.

Who takes the solo

The Solo list chooses who solos.

  • You … you keep playing. The band stays on backing and short answers
  • Trade … you trade solos for a set number of bars. The list beside it picks 4 bars / 8 bars / 12 bars, and from which chorus the trading starts
  • Handoff … when one player finishes a phrase, it passes to the other

The keys are S (who solos) and T (trade length).

One piano

The piano either plays backing or answers. It does not do both at once. Same as a live session with one pianist. Clear the Piano check under Band in Settings, and Feelism’s piano stops. Bass and drums remain. This is the straightforward setup when you are comping on a keyboard yourself.

Level

The Fills knob in Mix is the level of the answer line, the theme, and the AI solo. At 0, only the answers go silent (the backing stays). For the overall balance, see Mix, levels, and reverb.

What each tune remembers

When you open a tune, the settings prepared for that tune load (a tune with none prepared starts at tenor, Fills on, from chorus 1, and trading from chorus 1). Changes you make after that are remembered for this tune. The next time you open the same tune, the remembered settings are used. To wipe them clean, use Reset tune settings.

When nothing comes back

  1. Is the Fills check on?
  2. Is the start chorus still a later time through? (compare it with the chorus count on the status line)
  3. Is Fills in Mix at 0?
  4. Is your sound arriving? If the In number on the screen does not move, see The band does not respond
