Vocals
Sing or scat into a microphone.
How to connect for a session with singing or scat (improvising without words). It is almost the same as a wind instrument. Your own voice in the headphones changes how easy it is to sing, so that part is written out with more care.
Connect
- Plug the mic into the input on the audio interface labeled mic or MIC
- For a studio mic that needs no battery (a condenser mic), turn on the switch labeled 48V or Phantom. A tough stage mic (a dynamic mic) does not need it
- Plug the headphones into the audio interface’s output. If you use speakers, the mic picks that sound up and it keeps howling (feedback)
- Sing, and check that the In number at the top of Feelism moves
Set the size with the knob on the audio interface. At your loudest note it should not clip. At a soft note it should not disappear.
Hear your voice
For singing, how your voice comes back in the headphones decides how easy it is to sing. Open Mix and adjust.
- Self-mix … on from the start. It returns your voice to the headphones
- Return level … starts at 2.5 (0–12). Voice often comes back quieter than an instrument. Raise it if you cannot hear yourself. Too high, and it breaks up
- Low cut … turn on only if rumble in the voice, or low end from the mic, bothers you (it starts off)
- Return reverb … starts at 0.15. Reverb is on your return only. At 0 the voice is dry. This knob is separate from the band’s reverb
You can also slip one ear off the headphones and hear your live voice. In that case, turn Self-mix off. Otherwise you hear your own voice twice, with two delays.
Watch the response
- Open a practice tune and press Play
- Scat a short phrase, then leave a little space
- The band answers (you can also turn answers off. See Fills)
Syllables with a clear start, such as “doo” and “dah,” are easier for pitch to catch. A whisper, breath alone, or an extreme growl is unreliable.
Skip these
- Running the backing on speakers while a mic is up (feedback, and the band leaking into the mic)
- Placing the mic far away and picking up the room’s reverb with it (pitch will not stay steady)
- Leaving Self-mix on while a mixer, or the interface’s “hear me at once” feature, is also loud (You hear yourself twice)
If your voice is coming in and the band still does not join you, see The band does not respond.
