Mix, levels, and reverb

Levels, parts, return, and reverb on the Mix screen.

Levels live under the Mix button. Press it and a screen opens. Close or Esc closes it. The number beside the button is the current level of the whole band. The screen is about as wide as Settings, so the knobs are easy to move with the mouse.

After you close it, the short bars and numbers for In · Return · Out stay on the screen. You can check the cables while you adjust the level.

Test on the screen plays Feelism Blues. The chart of the tune you have open stays as it is. Level knobs go to the sound at once during the test. Press Test again, close the screen, or press Esc, and it stops.

At the top of the screen are Self-mix, Low cut, and Pitch. Low cut starts off. Turn it on and only your return loses some low end (for rumble on upright bass or voice. Saxophone can leave it off). Pitch detection does not change. While Self-mix is off, Low cut does nothing.

The knobs, in order

From the top. The numbers are the starting values.

  • Gain … the whole band (0–1.0, 0.85). The key is G. Shift+G lowers it. Settings → Devices has the same knob (you can lower the level without opening Mix)
  • Piano … 0–1.0, 1.00
  • Bass … 0–1.0, 1.00
  • Drums … 0–1.0, 1.00
  • Fills … the fill line, the theme, and the AI solo (0–1.0, 1.00). The same knob as Cl on the Diagnostics screen
  • Keys … the on-screen keyboard and a MIDI keyboard (0–1.0, 1.00). The same knob as Kb on the Diagnostics screen
  • Return level … how loud your sound is when it comes back to the headphones (0–12, 2.5)
  • Return reverb … reverb on your return only (0–1, 0.15)
  • Band reverb … reverb on the band only (0–1, 0)

− + on each side of a knob move it. For Gain, Piano, Bass, Drums, Fills, Keys, and Return level, the step is 0.01 when the current value is under 0.30, and 0.05 otherwise. Click the number and you can type it (Enter confirms, Esc puts the old value back).

There are no mute or solo buttons. Set a part to 0 and only that part goes silent. Piano, Bass, Drums, Fills, and Keys sit inside Gain, so lowering Gain brings the whole band down together. Your return (Self-mix) sits outside Gain. If the return is loud, or you are worried about feedback, lower Return level too. After you switch the driver or the output, Gain and Return level may drop to 0.2 for safety (you raise them yourself. See the note in Settings → Devices). Settings → Band has the same knobs, and on/off, for piano, bass, and drums.

Reverb

Band reverb starts at 0 (no reverb). Raise it and the piano gets more, while bass and drums get less. It does not touch the click or your return.

Return reverb is reverb on your sound only. It makes singing and scat easier. It does nothing while Self-mix is off.

The two checks at the top

  • Self-mix … whether your sound comes back to the headphones (it starts on). Details are in Self-mix and delay
  • Pitch … whether Feelism listens for the pitch of sound from a mic or a line (it starts on). A MIDI keyboard and the on-screen keyboard still work when it is off. Beside it, the pitch it is hearing right now is shown

Where it is kept

Mix settings are kept for the whole app, not per tune. They carry over when you change tunes. The file location is in Data folder.

Find it by what you want

  • Your sound is quiet → Return level (Self-mix and delay)
  • The band is too loud → Gain
  • Only the piano is in the way → set Piano in Mix to 0, or clear the Piano check in Settings → Band
  • You are playing bass → turn Bass off in Settings → Band (or set Bass in Mix to 0)
  • You do not want answers → set Fills to 0, or clear the Fills check (Fills)
