Double-time
Manual and automatic double-time. The tempo stays; the feel gets finer.
Double-time keeps the tempo and the chords as they are, and only makes the band’s pulse finer. Feelism has one you switch yourself, and one that comes in on its own when it hears a busy solo. Both start off.
The important part
In double-time, the tempo does not change. The speed of the chord changes does not change either. What changes is how the bass walks, how the drums subdivide, and how the piano enters. To raise the tempo itself, change the BPM number (Play and Stop).
Switch it yourself (Force double-time)
This is the Force double-time check on the top row (under Groove). While it is on, the pulse stays fine. You can switch it while playing.
How it gets finer depends on the Feel.
- Bossa, Samba, Calypso, waltz … the bass walks in eighth notes
- Ballad … the bass walks in quarter notes
- 5/4 … it fills beat 2
- 7/4 … it fills beats 2 and 4
It comes in on its own (Auto double-time)
Turn on Auto double-time. When your solo gets busier, the band moves to double-time from the end of the chorus. It is close to a live band noticing “here it comes” and joining you.
How it enters is set in Settings → Sound and Auto double-time.
- Window … how many bars at the end of the chorus to look at (Last 4 bars or Last 8 bars)
- Sensitivity … Harder / Medium / Easier
This is a separate control from Force double-time. If both are on, Force wins, and the pulse stays fine the whole time.
When it does not enter
- Force double-time is on. While that is on, the automatic one does nothing (the pulse is already fine the whole time)
- You are in a 2-feel section. Double-time does not happen during 2-feel (Feel and meter)
- The solo is not busy yet. Raise Sensitivity, or widen Window
- You are in the middle of a chorus. The automatic one switches at the top of a chorus. Play busier in the last bars, and it changes from the next time through

Short words show on the status line. 2x means Force double-time is on. DT armed means it is ready to enter. DT dt2 is the step before that. DT 4beat means it has moved to quarter-note walking. If it will not enter, watch this line and adjust Sensitivity until it lands.
