Write MusicXML
How to export MusicXML Feelism can read, and which chords, beats, and feel to include.
What Feelism reads is an uncompressed file written out from notation software. The extension is .musicxml. A compressed .mxl cannot be read.
Write it out
In the notation software’s export (the screen sometimes says Export), choose MusicXML. Choose the uncompressed one (the screen sometimes says uncompressed). If the file name ends in .musicxml, it is the right one. If it is .mxl, choose the uncompressed one again.
When you post to Forum, the file name may use only plain letters, digits, and . _ - (for example Autumn_Leaves.musicxml). A Japanese file name cannot be used on Forum. That limit does not apply when you import only onto your own computer.
What to put in it
Feelism does not read the whole look of the chart. It reads these, which the backing uses.
- Tune name (the title of the piece. It shows on the Find a tune button)
- Chords (chord symbols on the bars. If one bar has several and no position is given, they are spaced evenly through the bar)
- Meter (beats in one bar. 4/4, 3/4, and so on)
- Tempo (the metronome number)
- Groove: above a bar, write
Feel: swing. Where it saysswing, use the same English word as Feel on the screen (for examplebossa, shuffle). A bar with nothing written keeps the Feel you picked on the screen. A bar with no chord continues the previous chord - Your own rights statement (your own charts and Forum): above a bar, write
Rights: original. The words you can use areoriginal(your own tune),publicDomain(a tune whose rights have expired), andchordsOnly(title and chords only). If nothing is written, it is recorded as unknown. For tunes that come with Feelism, the catalog value is the one that counts
Melody
Notes can be read, but the current screen has no button that plays the melody. Your own charts and Forum ask you to confirm the rights at import. Do not put someone else’s copyrighted melody in as it is. An original for practice, or a tune whose rights have expired, is fine.
A sample
Feelism Blues, which comes with the app, is a Feelism original (a 12-bar blues. Feel: swing is above the bars, and a melody is included). As a sample of the writing, you can download the same file here.
Open it in notation software and look inside, or put it into Feelism from Your own charts and check. Standard tunes are not used as the sample.
