It feels late

How to reduce delay. Turn Self-mix off, and how to choose a device.

If your own sound comes back late, that alone makes it hard to play. Almost always, your sound is taking a round trip through the computer, or the device choice is off. Try these from the top.

Turn Self-mix off first

Open Mix and clear Self-mix (the key is X). Your sound no longer goes through the computer.

Then hear yourself in one of these ways.

  • Turn on Direct Monitor on the audio interface (some boxes say Monitor or Mix). The sound goes straight to the headphones inside the box, so there is almost no delay
  • For a horn or a voice, hang one ear of the headphones loosely and hear the room

If that is easier to play, the round trip was the cause. You still hear the band. Pitch is still being read, so fills do not change (Self-mix and latency).

Fix the device choice

In Settings, under Devices, choose how sound goes in and out.

  1. Set Driver to ASIO. It often comes with the audio interface, and the delay is clearer than the shared Windows speaker path
  2. Check that both Output and Input are that audio interface (with ASIO, the input is “same as the output”)
  3. To change how much sound is processed at once (the buffer), open Settings → Window → Diagnostics. Make it smaller while the sound still holds together. If it starts to crackle, move it back one step

Check the number

The numbers across the top include how long the round trip takes, in milliseconds. self-mix high appears when the round trip is over 15 milliseconds.

The aim is 10–15 milliseconds or less for the whole path. Feelism does all of this inside this computer. It does not process over the internet, and it does not play through a browser.

If it is still late

  • Are the headphones wireless (Bluetooth)? Wireless is a poor fit here. Use a cable
  • Is the audio interface on a USB hub? Plug it straight into the computer
  • Close heavy apps (video in a browser, a meeting app, a game)
  • Move Windows power settings away from saving power and toward performance
  • On a laptop, are you running on the battery?

If you hear two copies, that is not delay

Hearing yourself twice is a different problem. Go to Doubled sound. If there is no sound at all, go to No sound.
