No sound
How to tell input, return, and output apart when you hear nothing.
The way to sort this out is the three short bars (and numbers) near the top of the screen. In (is the instrument arriving?), Return (is your sound coming back to the headphones?), Out (is the band coming out?).
You cannot hear yourself, or you are quiet
- Is In moving? If it is still, fix the cable, the knobs on the audio interface, and Feelism’s device choice (Settings → Devices) first
- It is moving, and you still cannot hear yourself → open Mix and check that Self-mix is on. If it is off, you are set up to rely on the live sound, or on the unit’s instant return
- It is on, and you are still quiet → Return level (the starting value is 2.5, the maximum is 12). A headset or an upright bass can sound quiet. Raise it only when you cannot hear yourself. Too high, and it breaks up. If low-end rattle bothers you, you can turn Low cut on (it starts off)
You plugged in a headset partway through
If you connect a headset or speakers while the app is running, sound keeps coming from the device that was already playing. When the new device is found, one line appears at the top: Output “(device name)” was connected. Press Switch and the band moves there. If the current device is fine, press Ignore (it will not ask again until you unplug that device and plug it in again). Switching while you are playing stops playback once.
If that line does not appear, the kind of device may be different (while you are open on ASIO, the computer’s shared audio devices are not offered). Pick one from Settings → Devices.
You cannot hear the band
- Are the headphones in the audio interface’s output? If they are in the jack on the computer, you will not hear playback that goes through the audio interface
- Is the app on Play? (Space. It does nothing while you are typing)
- Are Piano / Bass / Drums in Mix at 0? Is the overall Gain at 0?
- Is 🔒 beside the tune name? A paid tune shows the chart only, and will not play (Paid tunes and the lock)
Delay, or hard to play
- Turn Self-mix off, and use only the unit’s instant return
- Is Driver on the output set to ASIO? (Settings → Devices). The ordinary shared speaker setting tends to be late
- If you made the amount of sound processed at once too small (you pick this in Settings → Window → Diagnostics) and the sound is dropping out, raise it one step
The aim is 10–15 milliseconds or less, overall. Feelism does not use processing on the internet, or playback in a browser. Details are in Delay, or hard to play.
You are playing, and nothing responds
- Is the In number moving? (if it is still, it is a connection problem)
- It is moving, and nothing responds → are you on Play? While stopped, the band does not join you
- Is Pitch in Mix on? Off means pitch is not taken from the audio
Details are in The band does not respond.
You hear yourself twice
If Self-mix is on, and the unit’s instant return or the amp’s live sound is also loud, you hear yourself twice, with two delays. Use only one of them. Feelism does not lay a sample sound on top of your live audio. Details are in You hear yourself twice.
Still stuck
